Over the last year or so, I’ve really started trying to make more things from scratch instead of buying them. I like knowing all of the ingredients in what I’m feeding my family, plus it just tastes better. Unfortunately, now we can’t stand the taste of store bought tortillas lol.
I use my stand mixer with a dough hook but you can easily hand knead them as well.
These stay fresh in the refrigerator for at least 3 days (they don’t last any longer than that in my house so I’m not sure of the true expiration).
We usually have some for taco night and then have the leftovers in a breakfast burrito and some kind of wrap for lunch.
Homemade Tortillas
Ingredients
- 1 Stick Melted Butter (Salted or Unsalted)
- 1 Cup Water
- 1 Tbsp Baking Powder
- 2 tsp Salt
- 3 C. All Purpose Flour
Directions
- Mix all ingredients together
- Knead for about 5 minutes either by hand or with the dough hook on a stand mixer. Dough should pull together into a ball and might be a bit sticky to the touch
- Put ball into lightly oiled bowl and cover with a clean towel
- Let sit for about 30 minutes.
- Turn dough out onto a floured surface and cut into 16 pieces
- Roll each piece into a ball
- Roll out or press each ball very thin (not quite translucent, but as thin as you can get)
- Cook over medium to medium high heat on a lightly oiled skillet/griddle/cast iron for 10-20 seconds on each side. The exact time and temperature will vary based on how thin the tortillas are & the type of pan you use. Watch for the tortilla to start to bubble, then it’s ready to flip. I use tongs to grab easily without messing them up or burning myself
- Enjoy immediately or refrigerate for later!
- You can make this with minimal tools but here are some that I use: Rolling Pin, Pastry Mat, Cast Iron, Stand Mixer
Let me know what you think if you try this recipe! I’m always open to tips and tricks as well.
